BiSN Asset Enhancement program (AEP) offers independent advice for operators for the selection and implementation of chemical treatments.

As part of the Asset Enhancement program we are currently conducting a series of experiments to test the potential of various Biotechnologies as well as offering independent review of any proposed system.

Biotechnology is already used by the oil and gas industry albeit only in a small number of applications. However the potential for Biotechnology in the oil and gas industry is huge. Optimised biological solutions to industry problems could not only provide economic advantages to operators but could also help environmental and global issues.

The industry is well aware of the problems microorganisms can cause in a production system. However the industry is only now beginning to realise the potential benefits microorganisms could bring to the oil and gas production.

Biotechnology applications have been shown to have potential in a variety of different applications.

Microbially Enhanced Oil Recovery (MEOR)

Microorganisms could potentially be used to both enhance and improve oil recovery from formations. MEOR has the potential to supply robust and low cost benefits to the industry.

Methanogenesis

A species of microorganism called methanogens can metabolise carbon substrates (coal) and residual oil resulting in methane production. If optimised this species of anaerobic microorganism could help to convert unrecoverable assets into recoverable hydrocarbons.
